Review of microbial biosensor for the detection of mercury in water

Abstract: The environmental contamination produced by heavy metals has increased rigorously due to rapid industrialization, agricultural, and anthropogenic activities, and it has become a serious concern lately. Heavy metal such as mercury is toxic beyond a certain level and has proven to be fatal in many cases. Hence it has become very important to monitor the level of contamination produced by mercury in environmental and water samples. Biosensors are used to detect the presence of mercury in water. A microbial biosen… Show more

“…Biosensors provide better stability and sensitivity than other standard methods (Bose et al., 2021). Biosensor applications in various fields include food processing industries for constantly monitoring the quality of food products and to ascertain pathogens in food, in the medical field to diagnose harmful diseases, detection of drug and cancer cells using fluorescence biosensors, in plant biology to detect enzyme transporters, substrates and receptors in plants, in biodefence, and wastewater and/or groundwater monitoring (Bose et al., 2022).…”
