Review of metal protection techniques and application of drugs as corrosion inhibitors on metals

Abstract: The inability of metals to resist degradation as a result of corrosion remains a unique global problem that depend on different metals for daily operations. Therefore, knowing the appropriate method to use is a key to ameliorate corrosion effect on metals. Green inhibitors serve as a modern, cheaper and environmentally favorable method to retard the effects of corrosion. Drugs are corrosion inhibitors which can reduce the action of corrosion without being hazardous to the environment as they are synthesized fr… Show more

“…Corrosion is defined as the deterioration of metals, and alloys as a result of chemical, and physical interactions with their surroundings. The anodic, and cathodic reactions are the chemical processes that create this behavior 2 . Not only that, but the expense of reviving corrosion-damaged manufacturing equipment contributed significantly to a country's gross domestic product.…”

“…From the above, the most common corrosion inhibition strategies are dedicated to steel [3][4][5], although copper and aluminum alloys are studied to a lesser extent [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. According to the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), through its "International Measures of Prevention, Application and Economics of Corrosion Technology" study, the Global cost of the damages produced by corrosion in 2013 was US$2.5 trillion.…”

“…Mostly, these organic compounds contain nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur. Moreover, organic molecules rich in π-electrons, associated with either triple, double, or conjugated bonds and aromatic rings, are recurrently found to act as corrosion inhibitors [2][3][4][5]17].…”

“…The method of corrosion control adopted by many industries includes material selection, rational design, cathodic protection and the use of chemical inhibitors [6][7][8]. Among the methods adopted for controlling corrosion, the use of chemical inhibitors has been one of the most practical and economical methods in combating corrosion [9]. Inhibitors mitigate corrosion by adsorbing onto the metal surface and impeding the anodic and/or cathodic electrochemical reactions occurring at the metal-medium interface [10,11].…”
