Review of haploporid (Trematoda) genera with ornate muscularisation in the region of the oral sucker, including four new species and a new genus

Abstract: Species of the Haploporidae Nicoll, 1914 with elaborate muscularisation of the oral sucker belong in three trematode genera, including three new species and a new genus from the intestine of fishes in Australian waters. Spiritestis Nagaty, 1948 is resurrected and S. herveyensis n. sp. is described from the mullet Moolgarda seheli (Forsskål) collected in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia; the latter differs from S. arabii Nagaty, 1948 in that the position of the genital pore is pharyngeal rather than post-phary… Show more

“…In contrast, information about the biology and parasitic fauna of Selenotoca multifasciata is limited and fragmentary. There is partial information about its trophic habits (Lee et al 1993), and some trichodinid ciliates and faustulid and haploporid trematodes have been described (Cribb et al 1999, Dove & O'Donoghue 2005, Pulis & Overstreet 2013.…”

“…Preliminary data regarding reproduction and growth have been provided by Barry & Fast (1992) in the Philippines and by Shao et al (2004) in Taiwanese waters. Likewise, some parasites of Scatophagus argus have been described in Indonesia (Yuniar et al 2007, Palm & Rückert 2009) and Australia (Pulis & Overstreet 2013). In contrast, information about the biology and parasitic fauna of Selenotoca multifasciata is limited and fragmentary.…”

“…Differentiation of the S. spasskii 28S rDNA sequences from their counterparts of the Intromugil and Capitimitta species is relatively high (11.6-12.9%), as is differentiation between S. spasskii and Sp. herveyensis (12.1%), although the two species belong to the same subfamily [2,3,15,16]. The esti mates are far greater than intergeneric differentiation within the subfamily Haploporinae (Nicoll, 1914) (4.8-8%) [14].…”
