Cornelian cherries were used as raw material for extraction of polyphenols with high antioxidant capacity by ultrasound‐assisted extraction. Factorial design was used for preliminary experiments in order to determine the most influential factors (temperature, extraction time, ethanol concentration, ultrasonic power, and liquid–solid ratio). In next step, face‐centered central composite experimental design with response surface methodology was used for multiresponse optimization in terms of maximized yields of polyphenols (phenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins) and antioxidant activity parameters (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays). Temperature (40–80°C), extraction time (20–60 min), and ethanol concentration (20%–60%) were investigated as independent variables. Experimental results were fitted to second‐order polynomial model and analysis of variance was used to determine fitness of the model and optimal conditions. The optimal conditions for multiresponse maximization were temperature of 80°C, extraction time of 54.8 min, and ethanol concentration of 28.2% with desirability function of 0.916. Practical applications Nowadays, focus of natural products processing is aimed toward development of novel, green and economically feasible techniques and utilization of agricultural and food industry waste streams as raw material for recovery of valuable bioactive compounds. Furthermore, novel procedures should be optimized to increase yield and target compounds and minimize resource (solvent, time, and energy) consumption. This research represents investigation of underutilized fruit, that is, cornelian cherry, as a source of bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity. The paper provides information about optimization of ultrasound‐assisted extraction and utilization of dried cornelian cherries as alternative raw material for production of polyphenol‐rich extracts.

Green Marketing as the Source of the Competitive Advantage of the Business

Abstract:In this work we focused on summarizing the principles of green marketing and the concepts related to it. The aim of this contribution was to prove the relationship between the implementation of green marketing principles and sustainable competitive company position on the market. In order to prove the relationship between the implementation of green marketing principles and the competitive market position of companies, we used a multiple regression method to reveal the relationship, despite many variables. This was preceded by a factor analysis that helped us to select the main factors of influence. In order to meet this goal, we have drawn from the surveys conducted by PwC (Bratislava, Slovakia), the Automobile Industry Association and the Slovak Automobile Institute to identify key factors and future expected development in the auto industry supplier segment and our marketing research, conducted from December 2015 to February 2016. Based on the results of marketing surveys, research responses and the study of available resources, we concluded that there is no comprehensive green marketing implementation model linking environmental consumer behavior with a link to the company's marketing strategy. The contribution could help the Automotive Industry Union to present requirements to the government and help create incentives for the alternative vehicle market, and our findings could be incorporated into the creation of companies' strategy.

This study was aimed to develop a novel nanocarrier for coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) by a green process that prevented the use of surfactants and organic solvents. Triglyceride/phospholipid‐based nanocarriers were developed through high‐pressure homogenization (an industrial feasible process), and a 25‐1 fractional factorial design was adopted to assess the influences of formulation variables on the considered responses, including vesicle size, entrapment efficiency, loading capacity, and solubility of the vehicles in simulated gastrointestinal fluids. The optimized formulation was further in‐depth characterized in terms of morphology, release behavior, biocompatibility (Caco‐2 cell cytotoxicity and histological examination), thermal behavior, and Fourier transform infrared analysis. Optimal nanocarriers were found to have mean particle size of 75 nm, narrow particle distribution, and CoQ10 entrapment of 95%. The optimized formulation was stable upon incubation in simulated gastrointestinal fluids without considerable leakage of cargo, which was in agreement with their sustained release behavior. Microscopic observations also confirmed nanosized nature of the vesicles and revealed their spherical shape. Moreover, toxicity evaluations at the cellular and tissue levels revealed their nontoxic nature. In conclusion, triglyceride/phospholipid‐based nanocarriers proved to be a green safe vehicle for delivery of CoQ10 with industrial‐scale production capability and could provide a new horizon for delivery of hydrophobic nutraceuticals. Practical application Green nanostructure formulation approaches have recently gained tremendous attraction for their safe profile especially when it comes to supplements, which are generally recommended for daily use. However, their sufficient association with cargoes and industrial‐scale production have remained considerable challenges. This study focuses on the development of lipid‐based nanocarriers for CoQ10 by an industrial feasible process that prevents the use of any surfactants or organic solvents.
