Review of Gasteruption Latreille (Hymenoptera, Gasteruptiidae) from Iran and Turkey, with the description of 15 new species

Abstract: The genus Gasteruption Latreille, 1796 (Hymenoptera: Evanioidea: Gasteruptiidae: Gasteruptiinae) from North Iran and Turkey is revised, keyed and fully illustrated for the first time. In total 36 species are treated of which 33 are recorded from Turkey and 23 from Iran. Fifteen species are new for science: Gasteruption aciculatum van Achterberg, sp. n., Gasteruption agrenum van Achterberg, sp. n., Gasteruption brevibasale van Achterberg & Saure, sp. n., Gasteruption coriacoxale van Achterberg, sp. n., Gasterup… Show more

“…Since the works of Bischoff (1927), Hedicke (1930Hedicke ( , 1939aHedicke ( , 1939bHedicke ( , 1939c, and Crosskey (1951Crosskey ( , 1962, the most consistent classification considers the superfamily to comprise three extant familes-Aulacidae, Gasteruptiidae, and Evaniidae (e.g., Mason, 1993;Grimaldi and Engel, 2005;Sharkey et al, 2012). The monophyly of evanioids is abundantly supported in analyses of morphological and molecular data sources (e.g., Dowton and Austin, 1994;Dowton et al, 1997;Vilhelmsen et al, 2010;Sharkey et al, 2012;Payne et al, 2013), and they are also one of the few superfamilies for which there have been comparatively comprehensive modern phylogenetic studies and revisions (e.g., Aulacidae [Jennings and Austin, 2000;Smith, 2001;Turrisi, 2006Turrisi, , 2007Turrisi, , 2014Turrisi et al, 2009;Turrisi and Madl, 2013], Gasteruptiidae [Jennings and Austin, 2002;Macedo, 2009Macedo, , 2011Zhao et al, 2012;Achterberg and Talebi, 2014], Evaniidae [Deans and Huben, 2003;Deans, 2005;Deans et al, 2006;Kawada and Azevedo, 2007;Mullins et al, 2012]). …”

“…While G. assectator is one of the commonest members of the genus across Europe, the other two here studied species were until recent thought to be very rare and recorded in wetlands (Saure 2006, Saure and Schmid-Egger 2010, van Achterberg and Talebi 2014. They are both bound to terrestrial reed beds associated with wet meadows with high diversity of flowering plants, G. nigrescens was recorded in warm sandy regions with high content of salt in soil.…”

“…The genus Gasteruption Latreille, 1796, represents a relatively uniform group of parasitoid wasp-like hymenopterans, characterized by their slender body, thick hind tibiae and short to very long ovipositor of females (Kieffer 1912, Šedivý 1958, Wall 1994, van Achterberg and Talebi 2014. Around 500 species are known worldwide, of which 30 species have been recorded in Europe (van Achterberg and Talebi 2014).…”

“…The study of gasteruptiid wasps has been minimal for several decades. It is only recently, that the Palaearctic and Northeast Oriental gasteruptiid wasps are well investigated (Zhao et al, 2012, van Achterberg, Talebi, 2014Tan et al, 2016;Saure et al, 2017). Our knowledge of the gasteruptiid fauna of the vast area of Russian Far East is quite fragmentary with only few overviews available (Alekseev, 1995;Alekseev, Proshchalykin, 2012).…”
