Review of Epilepsy - Etiology, Diagnostic Evaluation and Treatment

Abstract: Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder in the US, affecting nearly 2.5 million Americans. The economic impact of epilepsy represents estimated direct and indirect costs of 12.5 billion dollars per year. Patients with this disorder experience increased morbidity and mortality with long term fatality rates of 24%. Multiple diagnostic tools are used to identify and classify the seizure type/syndrome, etiology and localization of seizures, including electroencephalogram (EEG), magnetic resonance … Show more

“…As stated above, the actual pathology in epilepsy is not always identifiable macroscopically, even with the latest MRI or other diagnostic tools, and the picture is complicated by the multiple predisposing conditions in epilepsy 63 . We suppose that in many cases the pathology may consist of microscopic changes in structures facilitating extracellular ion fluxes that set the extracellular ion concentrations.…”

“…Etiology (WEINSTEIN, 2011). Besides electroencephalography (EEG), another variety of diagnostic tools can also be utilized for the description of a syndrome, such as: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), magneto encephalography (MEG), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and neuropsychiatric testing (JEWELLS et al,2014).…”
