Review of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators and Their Applications in Soft Robots

Abstract: Robots play an increasingly important role in industrial production and daily life. Traditional robots are mostly made of hard materials, such as metal and plastic. Although rigidity of the material enables the traditional robot to perform tasks that are difficult for humans, for instance, carrying heavy objects, it also limits its adaptability. In nature, animals and plants are mostly made of soft materials, which make them have very high compliance and realize a variety of unimaginable actions. Similar to na… Show more

“…Electroactive polymers (EAPs) use electric stimuli to deform. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are a type of EAPs that comprise two compliant electrodes that are compressed when high voltage is applied to them [65]. Compression force can be used to induce motion [66,67].…”

“…DE actuators are featured by high power density, fast response speed, large strain and strain rate, good reliability, and long lifetime. [ 113 , 114 , 115 , 116 , 117 , 118 ] Underwater, the weight of the DE actuator is balanced by buoyance and its surrounding water can be used as an electric ground, which enables high payload [ 119 ] and even untethered swimming of soft robots. [ 120 ] One concern of DE actuators is its high operating voltage (typically thousands of volts), which can cause safety problem for biomedical and wearable applications.…”
