Review of Design Heuristics and Design Principles in Design for Additive Manufacturing

Abstract: The advent of additive manufacturing (AM) in recent years have had a significant impact on the design process. Because of new manufacturing technology, a new area of research emerged – Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) with newly developed design support methods and tools. This paper looks into the current status of the field regarding the conceptual design of AM products, with the focus on how literature sources treat design heuristics and design principles in the context of DfAM. To answer the researc… Show more

“…During the product development process, designers use different sources of design knowledge formalised through various constructs such as principles, heuristics, rules, and guidelines [27]. In this research, the extracted design knowledge will be formalised in the form of Design Principles (DPs) as it is a construct with an appropriate level of abstractness for the conceptual design phase [28] and has been used previously for the similar intended purpose [16,18]. Hence, Fu et al's formal definition of DP has been used: "Design principle is a fundamental rule or law, derived inductively from extensive experience and/or empirical evidence, which provides design process guidance to increase the chance of reaching a successful solution" [27].…”

“…Figure 1: Own depiction of the scope of design heuristics based on a classification of DfX Methods by [3] As the goal of using DH is defined as information support to guide engineers to reach an acceptable solution [4], a DH should contain some specifications, restrictions and suggestions. It can be delivered in a written form and/ or as a visualized representation [5].…”

“…Commonly used design tools to support DfAM and to help designers consider manufacturing costs and constraints include lists of design principles and CAD-based software (Pradel et al 2018; Valjak & Lindwall 2021). Another commonly used tool, the Design for Additive Manufacturing Worksheet (Booth et al 2017), lists design principles along with a scoring system to allow designers to evaluate a design’s suitability for AM.…”
