Review of Comorbidities of Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Implications for Daily Clinical Practice

Abstract: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, recurrent skin inflammatory disease associated with a variety of comorbidities, like reduced quality of life, metabolic syndrome, sexual dysfunction, working disability, axial spondyloarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, depression, and anxiety. Like psoriasis, HS patients have been found to have higher risk of cardiovascular death and suicide risk. “…Children and adults with HS suffer from the same complications, such as anaemia, lymphoedema and sinus tract formation to the surrounding organs (bladder, rectum). 4,30 Serious cutaneous, extracutaneous and systemic infections, associated with higher mortality, may also complicate the course of HS patients. 31 HS is also associated with various comorbid disorders, with no reported differences between early and adult onset.…”

“…It is characterized by nodules, abscesses, fistulae and large scarred areas and usually accompanied by pain and purulent secretions with unpleasant odor [ 1 , 2 ]. Obesity, tobacco and hormonal disorders have been postulated as the main factors that influence the onset and evolution of the disease [ 2 ], and it has been associated with multiple physical comorbidities such as spondyloarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and increased cardiovascular risk [ 3 , 4 ]. Since HS is an autoinflammatory skin disorder [ 5 , 6 ] with a great clinical heterogeneity, a growing body of comorbidities both cutaneous [ 7 ] and extracutaneous [ 3 , 4 , 8 ] were claimed to be linked to it.…”
