Review of Colorectal Studies Using the National Cancer Database

Abstract: The National Cancer Database (NCDB) is a large clinical oncology database developed with data collected from Commission on Cancer (CoC)-accredited facilities. The CoC is managed under the American College of Surgeons, and is a multidisciplinary team that maintains standards in cancer care delivery in health care settings. This database has been used in multiple cancer-focused studies and reports on cancer diagnosis, hospital-level, and patient-related demographics. “…Studies have evaluated the research utility of the US NCDB (National Cancer Database) and SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results) database, which emphasizes the importance of promoting awareness of the data available to facilitate research. 34,35 In terms of future development of these data sources, patient reported outcome measures and functional bowel outcomes that would impact on quality of life after cancer surgery are increasingly recognized outcome measures influencing treatment decision making in cancer care. 36,37 Benign surgical outcomes such as incisional hernia rate and small bowel obstruction could similarly have an impact on patient quality of life.…”

“…A retrospective review of NSCLC was carried out using data from the National Cancer Database (NCDB), a public database maintained by Commission on Cancer (CoC)-accredited facilities. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the American College of Surgeons, this nationwide database encompasses patient and facility data from all 50 states and captures approximately 70% of all cancer cases [ 12 ]. The NCDB contains de-identified patient statistics, including information on demographics, socioeconomic factors, tumor characteristics, and outcomes [ 13 ].…”

“…The NCDB is a very large database managed by the American College of Surgeons, comprising information from Commission on Cancer (CoC)-accredited facilities. The database has been used in several cancer-focused studies (Losk et al 2016 ; Kelley and Tsikitis 2019 ). Data were obtained from the NCDB Participant Use Data File (PUF).…”
