Review of Blindness and Visual Impairment in Paraguay: Changes Between 1999 and 2011

Abstract: The reduction in blindness and visual impairment due to cataract in Paraguay between 1999 and 2011 was highly significant. Results and coverage of cataract surgical services improved substantially. The reported numbers of cataract operations may not have been complete as these do not seem to match the dramatic improvement in the cataract situation in Paraguay.

“…[14] Through the RAAB Repository an increasing amount of comparable data are available from different settings,[30] including examples of national follow-up surveys that monitor change over time. [39] eCSC can be generated retrospectively from data previously collected, as demonstrated here. In future, it can be calculated easily from standard data collected in RAAB and other visual impairment surveys, and to ensure consistent and comparable results, the calculation of eCSC could be incorporated into the automated RAAB analysis.…”

“…Moreover, cataract has been found to be the most common cause of blindness in various population-based studies. However, the cau- ses of blindness and its prevalence vary in countries depending on their levels of economic development and even within different regions of the same country (13,14,23,24) . A study on Latin American countries reported that unoperated cataract is the main cause of blindness (22) .…”

“…In the Barbados eye study, the most common causes of blindness were, in descending order, cataract (58.3%), glaucoma (14.3%), diabetic re tinopathy (8.7%), optic atrophy (7.1%), and AMD (2.4%) (23) . Cataract is also the main cause of blindness in Paraguay (24) . In several studies performed in European countries and the USA, which are places with high life expectancy, the most common cause of visual impairment has been shown to be AMD (25,26) .…”

“…Still, the overall quality of cataract surgery in Suriname was relatively good when compared with other countries in the region. Only Argentina (82% good, 8.8% borderline and 9.2% poor outcomes) and Paraguay (77% good, 15.3% borderline and 7.7% poor outcomes) showed comparable results 1 12 27. The better national visual outcomes of eyes operated during the last 3 years when compared with those operated 4–6 years and 7 or more years ago could be anticipated, as surgeon skills, surgical facilities, and thus surgical outcome, continued to improve (expert opinion JP).…”
