The biomass energy source has been a promising renewable alternative for fossil fuels and their inevitable environmental impacts on Earth's life, from which the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the environment pollution followed by consequent ecosystem imbalance are major concerns. Biofuels and bioplastics are well-known examples of renewable products obtained from biomass that has shown increasing potential to succeed the conventional fuels and plastics. However, biofuels and especially bioplastics have faced their main hindrance in their uncompetitive costs. Furthermore, the "drop-in" plastics are the market leaders, which reduce the carbon footprint but continue to state the biodegradability concern attributed to most of plastic products, the packaging sector. This chapter outlines the common features and feedstocks of biofuels and bioplastics aiming to support their associated production set toward the bio-based and biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as promising models with fast-growing production capacity forecasted for the next years and biodegradable solution for short-lived and disposable plastic materials.

The growing demand for energy resources and the increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has given biofuels a lot of attention. Liquid biofuels can be a significant alternative for the transport sector. Generally, biofuels are categorized into four generations based on the feedstock. This review reports the availability, economic feasibility, and potential of biofuel feedstock in global scenario. Feedstock for first-generation biofuel comprises edible resources impacting the food supply. Second generation biofuels are based on different residual materials and nonedible fuel crops. Cost and technological limita-tions for commercialization hinders this option. Microalgae are the feedstock for third generation biofuels providing the highest yield compared to the other two generations. A scale-up to commercial level is not possible as this requires further development. Genetically modified microorganisms are used as a feedstock for fourth generation biofuel production with the highest possible yield. Third and fourth generation biofuels have potential to replace fossil fuels. This review recommends certain suggestions for sustainable biofuel production.

Bifunctional Intimacy and its Interplay with Metal‐Acid Balance in Shaped Hydroisomerization Catalysts

The combined impact of platinum location and metal-acid balance on the catalytic performances of HUSY zeolite aluminashaped bifunctional catalysts was evaluated in n-hexadecane hydroconversion reaction. For well-balanced catalysts, the deposition of Pt in the alumina resulted in lower isomerization selectivity as compared to when platinum was located in the zeolite. In the latter case, the maximal distance between Pt and acid sites was found to be in the nanometric scale (high intimacy) whereas in the former it was in the micrometric scale (low intimacy), particularly due to the presence of large clusters of HUSY zeolite. Nevertheless, whenever proper balance between functions was not ensured in high-intimacy catalysts, the low-intimacy and well-balanced catalysts were shown to perform better. The requirement for nanometric metal-acid sites intimacy must be hence combined with an adequate metal-acid balance to achieve optimal catalytic performance.
