Fonda 14 summed them up, along with papers on luminescence published in other journals, in a review article published in 1950. This included an important paper by Jenkins et al 15 on alkaline earth halofosphates, materials which completely replaced the zinc beryllium silicates previously used in fluorescent lamps.…”

Silberjodid‐Deckschichten auf Silber‐Unterlage werden kathodisch reduziert. Das dabei entstandene schwarze Silber ist in trockenem Zustand stabil, es glättet sich jedoch im Kontakt mit (sauerstoffreien) Lösungen, wobei als treibende Kraft die Abnahme der freien Grenzflächenenergie wirkt und zwischen Oberfläche und Zeit ein hyperbolischer Zusammenhang besteht. Die Geschwindigkeit der Einebnung steigt in Gegenwart komplexbildender Ionen wie Jodid, Cyanid, Thiosulfat, sie fällt bei negativer Polarisation des Silbers. Inhibitoren (Gelatine) hemmen sie. Der Vorgang wird als Umlösung gedeutet. Sie ist möglich, weil die Oberflächenatome teilweise Ionencharakter besitzen. Dabei bilden sich Oberflächenkomplexe, die mit denen in Lösung im Gleichgewicht stehen. Die Einebnungsgeschwindigkeit ist daher allein von der Gesamtkonzentration an Komplexen in der Lösung abhängig. Es handelt sich um einen lokalelementähnlichen Prozeß, bei dem Oberflächenionen in Komplexbindung über die Lösungsphase wandern, während sich Elektronen im Metall verschieben. Aus der Potentialabhängigkeit läßt sich der Ionencharakter der Oberflächenatome in Jodidlösung zu 0,3 berechnen.Die Experimente werden zur Deutung der Form des photographisch entwickelten Silbers herangezogen.
