The extremely vast biodiversity represented by marine mollusks alongside their widespread utility as a source of food and their high nutritional value has aroused great interest from the scientific community. Furthermore, they can be caught with ease, and their commercial breeding and farming is rampant. This article comprehends the global availability of these organisms, their pretreatment and handling procedures, and their health‐promoting potential with a focus on their antiviral, anti‐inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The emphasis herein is on their potential use in the food and nutraceutical industry. In addition, mollusks consumption as part of everyday diet can also be helpful in avoiding many ailments as they are rich in vital nutrients and active secondary metabolites, as well as have the ability to enhance immune response. Moreover, the available literature suggests that normal cooking practices have no notable adverse effects on their nutritional value and they retain certain bioactivities even after the action of digestive enzymes. Though mollusks have been widely studied in relation to the health‐promoting effects reviewed here, there is still more scope for further research in this direction in order to fully utilize this enormous source of food and nutraceuticals.

BACKGROUND: Owing to their biodiversity, many valuable natural compounds have been extracted from marine resources and used in the development of pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmeceutical products. The New Zealand black-footed abalone (Haliotis iris) is known to host a variety of bioactive compounds in its flesh.RESULTS: Water-soluble bioactive compounds were extracted from H. iris by subcritical water extraction technique, and the effect of subcritical water temperature (110-280 °C) on the extraction performance was studied. The highest antioxidant activity and subsequently glycogen and phenolic content, as well as concentration of bioactives, were found at temperatures between 220 and 250 °C. The carbohydrate content of the extracts peaked at 110 °C, which was then degraded at higher temperatures. Protein and amino acid contents of H. iris extracts were also decreased as the temperature increased above 160 °C. Furthermore, the H. iris extracts were found to be non-toxic. CONCLUSION:The results indicate that extraction temperature has a significant impact on the bioactivity of H. iris extracts. Subcritical water extraction can be used in place of more traditional techniques to create high-quality abalone extracts.

Microbial diversity of garden snail mucus

The search for new natural compounds for application in medicine and cosmetics is a trend in biotechnology. One of the sources of such active compounds is the snail mucus. Snail physiology and the biological activity of their fluids (especially the mucus) are still poorly studied. Only a few previous studies explored the relationship between snails and their microbiome. The present study was focused on the biodiversity of the snail mucus used in the creation of cosmetic products, therapeutics, and nutraceuticals. The commonly used cultivation techniques were applied for the determination of the number of major bacterial groups. Fluorescence in situ hybridization for key taxa was performed. The obtained images were subjected to digital image analysis. Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene was also done. The results showed that the mucus harbors a rich bacterial community (10.78 × 1010 CFU/ml). Among the dominant bacteria, some are known for their ability to metabolize complex polysaccharides or are usually found in soil and plants (Rhizobiaceae, Shewanella, Pedobacter, Acinetobacter, Alcaligenes). The obtained data demonstrated that the snail mucus creates a unique environment for the development of the microbial community that differs from other parts of the animal and which resulted from the combined contribution of the microbiomes derived from the soil, plants, and the snails.
