Review of 40 years of research carried out in Serbia on sunflower pollination

Abstract: -Sunflower pollination has been a subject of research for more than 40 years at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia. Since the first experiments in 1970s, the importance of climatic conditions was acknowledged and analyzed as a key factor for the performance of plants and pollinators. Climatic conditions, disease and pest problems changed significantly during this period, but sunflower production technology and breeding also advanced making seed production more stable. Nonetheless, t… Show more

“…They have a deep root system that allows them to flourish in rotations that maximize water use from the soil. Both crops can tolerate drought better than most other field crops but requires properly prepared soil starting with primary tillage performed in autumn instead of spring (Terzić et al, 2017). The primary rotation system in Eastern Europe is sunflower-wheat, with higher use of mechanization and decreased need for workers that led to lower production costs and higher profitability (Kaya et al, 2008).…”

“…In economic terms, the global value of the pollination service has been estimated between USD 235 and 577 billion per year [ 8 , 9 ]. While the link between many crops and their insect pollinators is quite well-known, especially for some of the main mass-flowering crops such as sunflower or rapeseed [ 10 , 11 ], the role of insect pollinators in the agricultural production of some widespread cultivated plant species remains unclear. This is particularly the case for aromatic plants exploited for their secondary metabolites, such as medicinal hemp, lavender, mint, or fennel.…”
