Review: Helicobacter pylori and extragastric diseases

Abstract: In the last year, many studies have demonstrated a potential role of Helicobacter pylori in the pathogenic mechanisms of different extragastric diseases. While the role of H pylori in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, idiopathic iron deficiency anemia, and vitamin B12 deficiency has already been demonstrated, there is growing evidence of other related conditions, especially cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurologic disorders, including neurodegenerative diseases. A summary of the results of the most relevan… Show more

“…[ 27 ] However, it produces a systemic response, mediated by pro-inflammatory cytokines, causing systemic manifestations, even in pediatric patients. [ 28 , 29 ] Its oncoprotein CagA has been associated with both carcinogenesis [ 30 ] and hematologic disorders, including thrombocytopenia. [ 31 ] Due to its molecular mimicry, this protein can cross-react with platelet-associated immunoglobulin G antibodies, therefore triggering autoimmune-induced destruction of platelets.…”

“…A possible association between HPI and over 50 systemic diseases has been described. In recent years numerous reviews focused on this topic [ 11 , 13 , 14 , 68 , 79 , 331 , 332 , 333 , 334 , 335 , 336 , 337 , 338 , 339 , 340 , 341 , 342 , 343 , 344 , 345 , 346 ]. Most of HPI–linked extra-gastroduodenal chronic diseases and disorders as well as treatments used for are known to increase risk of OP, falls and OFs, especially in the elderly [ 317 , 347 , 348 , 349 ].…”

“…It is shown that H. pylori has a large spectrum of both metabolic and non-metabolic extra-gastric manifestations. A striking study by Isave et al demonstrated the colonization of H. pylori in the hepatobiliary system of cirrhosis patients with a frequency of 50% [14]. Their findings support the studies that were pointed out toward the H. pylori infection and hepatocellular carcinoma [15].…”
