Review: Gastric cancer: Basic aspects

Abstract: Gastric cancer is still one of the most prevalent and deadliest cancers in the world. Although our knowledge about the disease has progressed extraordinarily, this has not been accompanied by our capacity to effectively treat the disease. In the last years, immunotherapy made its way into the cancer field and was responsible for major changes in the treatment success rates for several cancer types. Although gastric cancer was not among the first successful targets of this type of therapy, the relationship betw… Show more

“…Multiple genes are associated with gastric tumorigenesis [ 17 , 18 ]. In an effort to identify the genes responsible for the tumorigenesis of GC, we performed a genome-wide gene expression analysis of human GC and adjacent normal tissues from 27 Korean GC patients (NCBI GEO accession GSE30727) [ 19 ].…”

“…However, decoding the mechanisms of GC is of vital importance, as the molecular pathogenesis of GC has not been fully perceived. 2 According to what was mentioned above and since numerous studies have emphasized the destructive impact of H. pylori on human health, the current study discussed the association and mechanism of H. pylori inflammation and its role in GC.…”

“…1 Gastric cancer (GC) is the second major cause of mortality across the world. 2 The most common form of GC is adenocarcinoma, originating from the innermost layer of the gastric wall or mucosal layer. The second most frequent cause of cancer mortality around the world is gastric adenocarcinoma, and infection with the bacterial pathogen Helicobacter pylori is the most substantial recognized risk factor for this malignancy.…”

“…This was based on the estimated occurrence of 1 million cases worldwide [ 3 ]. As a result of the late detection of the disease at a more advanced stage, the mortality rate of gastric cancer is significant; for example, in 2020, it was 768,793, which places it as the fifth most prevalent cause of death due to cancer [ 4 , 5 ]. Despite the fact that surgery is the primary treatment with the intention of curing the disease, 40%–60% of those patients who undergo resection surgery show disease relapse [ 6 ].…”
