Review. Fluorescence Microscopy Studies of Porous Silica Materials

Abstract: In this article, we discuss how fluorescence microscopy techniques are used to investigate important characteristics of porous silica materials. We start with a discussion of the synthesis, formation mechanism and functionalization of these materials. We then give an introduction to single molecule microscopy and show how this technique can be used to gain deeper insights into some defining properties of porous silica, such as pore structure, host-guest interactions and diffusion dynamics. We also provide exam… Show more

“…Single molecule fluorescence microscopy and tracking can be used to obtain valuable information about the porous system and the host‐guest interactions of nanomaterials . The dynamics of guests inside porous nanoparticles, and the interactions of the guests with the walls of the nanoparticles are sometimes the key for the targeted application.…”

“…[413][414][415] The connectivity among mesochannels has been visualized by single-molecule fluorescence microscopy (see Ref. [416] for a review). In these experiments, luminescent probe molecules were incorporated in as-synthesized mesoporous silica, and their diffusion along the channels was followed with a fluorescence microscope.…”
