“…2 According to Bellow and Gillespie (2014), the primary hospital factor impacting ED overcrowding is a lack of available inpatient beds for patients who enter the hospital through the ED, which leads to boarding. ED overcrowding also contributes to broader issues, such as staff burnout, in an environment where a shortage of trained personnel can make a acquisition of new staff challenging (Johnston et al, 2016). Consequently, a number of studies have noted boarding as a prominent cause of increased wait times for ED care, and as a significant contributing factor to ED overcrowding (Weiss et al, 2005;Bair, Song, Chen, & Morris, 2010;Felton, Residorff, Krone & Laskaris, 2011).…”

“…Likewise, in the integrative review evaluating staff perceptions of the working conditions in EDs by Johnston, Abraham, Greenslade, Thom, Carlstrom, Wallis, and Crilly (2016), the researchers contend that experience, rather than age, gender, or role, plays a key role in one's perception of work-related stress, results similar to the participants of this study.…”

“…Such feelings and concerns may impact the retention of emergency nurses long-term. As a result, Johnston et al (2016) report that "EDs therefore need to achieve a balance that stimulates and challenges staff, without overwhelming them, to retain workers" (p.24).…”
