Review Article: Progress in fabrication of transition metal dichalcogenides heterostructure systems

Abstract: Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductors have attracted significant attention because of their rich electronic/photonic properties and importance for fundamental research and novel device applications. These materials provide a unique opportunity to build up high quality and atomically sharp heterostructures because of the nature of weak van der Waals interlayer interactions. The variable electronic properties of TMDCs (e.g., band gap and their alignment) provide a platform for the design of novel… Show more

“…Because of the novel properties and wide applications of 2H-MoS 2 2D layers, MoS 2 2D layers have been prepared by various physical or chemical methods [41,[44][45][46][66][67][68][69]. Individual MoS 2 layers were usually obtained by the micromechanical cleavage technique [70] because of weak interactions between sulfur layers and strong intralayer interactions of MoS 2 bulks.…”

“…Unlike their bulk counterparts, monolayers of several semiconducting TMDCs display a direct gap at the K-points of their respective Brillouin zone with a transition energy in the visible range [7][8][9][10][11][12] . These systems exhibit a pronounced light-matter coupling and strong excitonic effects [13][14][15][16] The availability of different materials with a similar lattice structure but different bandgaps renders this material class extremely interesting as building blocks for heterostructures 17,18 , and allows for the engineering of the overall electronic and optical properties to a wide extend.…”

“…Photocatalytic properties of TM dichalcogenides (TMDC) attract most attention during last 10–15 years. Comprehensive review on the progress in their application, fabrication and experimental studies is just published . Both MoS 2 and WS 2 bulk prefer to be stacked in 2 H c phase and can be “restacked” from separate monolayers (MLs) using filtration, evaporation, precipitation, or centrifugation .…”
