Review article inferior vena cava thrombosis: a case series of patients observed in Taiwan and literature review

Abstract: Inferior vena cava thrombosis (IVCT) is rare and can be under-recognized. However, the associated complications and mortality may be severe. We report the first case series of IVCT observed in Taiwan with a brief literature review. Eight Taiwanese patients with IVCT between May 2012 and December 2019 were enrolled in this study. Deep venous thrombosis (DVT, 8/8) and pulmonary embolism (5/8) were reported. Various risk factors were identified, including an unretrieved inferior vena cava (IVC) filter, pregnancy,… Show more

“…The reasons for exclusion of the six other manuscripts were: review articles ( n = 2), filter insertion during pregnancy or postpartum ( n = 3), and no inferior vena cava filter inserted ( n = 1) ( Figure 1 ). The included study was a case series of Taiwanese patients with inferior vena cava thrombosis ( 64 ). This case series included one 46-year old woman who was pregnant and had an unretrieved inferior vena cava filter in situ .…”

“…The condition is often under-recognized as it is often not pursued as a primary diagnosis. According to the United States National Hospital Discharge Survey, from the years 1979 to 2005, the incidence of vena cava thrombosis (presumed to be predominantly IVCT) was found to be only 1.3% among all hospitalized patients diagnosed with venous thrombosis [ 8 ]. The clinical presentation of patients with IVCT may vary depending on the extent and site of thrombus formation within the IVC.…”

“…6 Also, it lowers the effectiveness of surgical treatment of coronary artery disease, etc. There are several mechanisms of thrombosis formation: [7][8][9] the activation of platelet and coagulation chains of homeostasis, disruption of synthesis for some blood coagulation factors II (Prothrombin), VII (Proconvertin), IX (Christmas factor), and X (Stuart-Prower factor), a decrease of fibrinolytic activity of blood, activation of lipid peroxidation, disruption of endothelium functional activity, etc. 10 Modern antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs influence the thrombocyte aggregation and blood coagulation system.…”
