Review and Evaluation of Protection Issues and Solutions for Future Distribution Networks

Abstract: This paper presents a comprehensive review and detailed investigation of the protection issues that may potentially arise due to the proliferation of technologies such as distributed generator (DG) and energy storage in future power distribution networks. A summary and critical evaluation of several potential protection and control solutions (applicable to the generators or the network), which are proposed as addressing one or more of the identified issues, are also presented. The analysis covers both economic… Show more

“…However, with the high penetration of distributed generation (DG) units into the DN, a conventional DN has substantially deteriorated specifically in terms of network protection [5][6][7][8]. Consequently, the relay sensitivity and selectivity have been disrupted due to the bidirectional current flow, which has ultimately caused the sympathetic tripping of the primary and backup protection and coordination failure with existing protection devices e.g., reclosure and fuse [9]. Moreover, it is alleged that the problems associated with DN protection are highly dependent on the network size and the type of integrated DGs.…”

“…However, a normal DN has significantly degraded in terms of network protection due to the widespread adoption of DG units [8], [9], [10], [11]. Due to the bidirectional current flow, the sensitivity and selectivity factor of each relay has been compromised, resulting in unnecessary trip of the main and secondary protection schemes together with the coordination sequence of merging protection components such as breaker and fuse failed [12], [13]. Furthermore, it has been asserted that these issues with the protection of DN vary greatly depending on the scale of the network and the integrated DGs used.…”
