Review and Evaluation of Corrosion Inhibitors Used in Well Stimulation

Abstract: Corrosion inhibitors are an indispensable part of the fluid mix pumped downhole when a well is acidized. Of the various approaches to mitigate corrosion, the best way to reduce corrosion problems in the petroleum industry is to use corrosion inhibitors. Determining the most effective corrosion inhibitor for a given environment is essential. There are enormous examples of chemical inhibitors, which are propriety mixtures of several chemicals to induce synergistic effect. But basic function of corrosion inhibito… Show more

“…Fortunately, selecting upgraded metal alloys or applying CIFs can greatly reduce corrosion damage. CIF is broadly defined here as any chemical (solution or gas) that retards the corrosion rate of a metal or alloy . This section will describe how corrosion rates are measured, methods for evaluating CIF performance, causes of corrosion in UGTO assets, examples of CIF designs, and opportunities for chemical optimization.…”

“…Corrosion inhibitors form a protective layer on metal well components, thus preventing corrosion by acids, salts, and corrosive gases [73][74][75]. Common corrosion inhibitors include acetaldehyde, acetone, ethyl methyl derivatives, formic acid, and isopropanol [46,76].…”
