Reversible night blindness in a patient with neuroendocrine tumour of pancreas

Abstract: model of ocular inflammation. In the case described, the patient was commenced on topical timolol in order to treat the secondary glaucoma; however, this had no effect on the inflammatory process. It is possible that that oral metoprolol was effective because it had a higher bioavailability within the posterior segment, as well as anteriorly. It was thus effective in suppressing ocular inflammation through the mechanisms described above. References

“…The best‐documented symptom of vitamin A deficiency in this population is night blindness, or prolonged dark adaptation. One patient in a case report complained of inability to see in dimly lit areas but adequate vision in good lighting 47 . A case report of a patient 10 years post–total pancreatectomy who developed night blindness and dry skin was found to have serum vitamin A deficiency, among other nutrient deficiencies, related to his self‐withdrawal from PERT 48 .…”

“…One patient in a case report complained of inability to see in dimly lit areas but adequate vision in good lighting. 47 A case report of a patient 10 years post-total pancreatectomy who developed night blindness and dry skin was found to have serum vitamin A deficiency, among other nutrient deficiencies, related to his self-withdrawal from PERT. 48 Deficiency may be unknown by the patient; of 7 patients with pancreatic insufficiency with low serum retinol, only 3 had night blindness, and none showed other physical signs or symptoms of deficiency, such as xerosis, hyperkeratinized skin lesions, bone pain, or anemia.…”

“…Исследователи не всегда проводили параллель между дефицитом витаминов и ЭНПЖ после резекции ПЖ. В ранних исследованиях сообщалось, что у пациентов редко развиваются клинические симптомы дефицита витамина А [29,30], что могло быть связано с короткой продолжительностью жизни после резекции ПЖ. В сообщении Sharma и соавт.…”
