Reversible and Efficient Absorption of SO2 with Natural Amino Acid Aqueous Solutions: Performance and Mechanism

Abstract: In previous research, we have found and reported for the first time that β-alanine aqueous solution could be employed to efficiently separate SO 2 from flue gas. However, the performance of most natural amino acids (AAs) on SO 2 absorption and their interaction mechanisms are not fully understood. In this work, the performance of 20 natural AA aqueous solutions on SO 2 absorption from flue gas was systematically studied. The experimental data showed that monoamino AAs (MAAs) exhibited good absorption performan… Show more

“…These results further prove that a low concentration of SO 2 exists in EG–Im–MTPB (1:2:1) DES by chemical absorption. According to the results, the SO 2 absorption process can be exhibited by eqs and , where SO 2 (g) and SO 2 (l) are the gaseous and liquid states, K represents the chemical equilibrium constant, and DES–SO 2 (phys) and DES–SO 2 (chem) represent the physical and chemical absorption of SO 2 by DES.…”

“…In fact, when SO 2 dissolves in water, different sulfur-containing compounds such as SO 2 , HSO 3 − , (OH)SO 2 − , and S 2 O 5 2− may coexist in water. Therefore, Wang et al 20 studied the interaction between amino acid and SO 2 and its different forms of sulfur-containing compounds using 20 natural amino acid aqueous solutions. Taking Gly aqueous solution as an example, the reaction mechanism of Gly aqueous solution absorbing SO 2 is proposed as shown in Figure 5 (R29)…”

“…Then, the results of SO 2 absorption by ChCl/DETA/EG ternary DESs at 298.15 K and 1.0 bar were studied and shown in Figure a. For ChCl/DETA/EG ternary DESs, an absorption capacity of 0.87 g/g is received with a molar ratio of 1:1:2, exhibiting a superior SO 2 uptake capability compared to other reported works. , For DES with a lower EG molar ratio, a decreased SO 2 absorption capacity is viewed (0.77 g/g). The increased viscosity of this DES should be the barrier to its capture of SO 2 .…”
