“…As a result, the skin becomes thin, with reduced elasticity, and it readily bruises and tears with normal handling or minimal trauma. 4 , 9 On histopathology and electron microscopy, this manifests as a thin epidermis and atrophy of the dermis, with disorganised collagen fibres that consist of loosely packed and variably sized fibrils. 9 , 10 Furthermore, chronic elevated cortisol can result in delayed wound healing.…”

“…Rarely, AFSFS may be reversible with correction of the underlying or concurrent disease process. 1,5 In a young cat, collagen dysplasia (CD) (aka cutaneous asthenia, dermatosporaxis or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) is a possible differential diagnosis, but signalment and history usually allow for differentiation. [8][9][10] In CD the skin is generally hyperextensible, which is not a feature of AFSFS, and reportedly a skin extensibility index of >19% is diagnostic.…”

“…In inflammatory and catabolic states (as seen in diabetes mellitus in people) upregulation of MMPs may be a potential cause for collagen fragmentation/dissolution. Rarely, AFSFS may be reversible with correction of the underlying or concurrent disease process 1,5 …”
