ABSTRACThe present study was conducted to determine the dietary protein requirement for optimal growth performance and body composition of juvenile sole fish. Four diets were formulated with different protein levels (D40, D45, D50 and D55% crude protein). The silverside fish (Atherina boyeri) was added to the diets as local animal protein source and to enhance palatability of the test diets. Fish were fed the artificial diets as 2% of the fish biomass daily divided into two equal portions. Juvenile sole with an initial weight of (6.65±0.2g) were distributed as 40 juveniles in each triplicate tank, each of 1m 3 volume. The experimental period lasted 120 days after start. The results showed significant differences (P<0.05) in growth performance and feed efficiency between diets. The highest performances in terms of (Finial weight, Weight gain, Average daily gain, Specific growth rate, Condition factor, Feed conversion ratio, Protein efficiency ratio, Protein productive value and Hepatosomatic index) were obtained with the D55% CP, followed by D50%, without significance difference between them. However, fish fed D40% crude protein diet recorded less performance parameters. No significance difference (P<0.05) in whole body chemical composition (dry matter, crude protein, crude lipid and ash) were found between fish fed all experimental diets. However, slight increase in whole body lipid contents were recorded with D50%CP and D55%CP levels. The results of the present study indicated that, D55% crude protein level can be optimal for meeting the requirement of juvenile sole, Solea aegyptiaca without adverse effects on growth performance and feed efficiency.

-Two methods routinely used to quantify total primary amine concentrations in seawater are the fluorescamine bulk assay and o-phthaldialdehyde derivatization with chromatographic separation (OPA-HPLC). Investigators using OPA-HPLC have observed net amino acid uptake by marine invertebrates; those using fluorescamine observe excretion of primary amines. We systematically compared the two methods with amino acid and ammonium standards and also conducted two excretion experiments with two species of bivalve molluscs. Mytilus edulis exhibits both uptake and excretion of primary amines and the flux is correlated with the initial concentration of amino acids. The two methods give comparable results, particularly after correcting the fluorescamine data for differences in relative fluorescence among amino acids.Mercenaria mercenariu exhibits net uptake of amino acids when flux is measured by OPA-HPLC and net excretion of fluorescamine-positive substances. Small peptides may contribute to the discrepancy between assay methods.

Production and excretion of nitrogenous end products was studied in the benthic Baltic isopod Saduria entomon (L.) under normoxic and anoxic conditions. S. entomon is ammonotelic.Normoxic haemolymph ammonia concentrations were 176 + 53 (SD) pm01 NH.,; I-' decreasing with time to 50 pm01 NH,' 1-' after 120 h anoxia. Normoxic ammonia efflux rate was 0.53 i-0.07 (SD) pm01 NH,' g-' h-', decreasing 90% after 96 h anoxia. Normoxic haemolymph urate amounted to 135 pm01 I-', increasing after 120 h under anoxia to 741 + 79 (SD) pm01 l-' Haemolymph urate concentrations were relatively high because of the ammonia excretion and an undetectable urate excretion even under anoxia. Circulating free amino acids also increased progressively under anoxia, from the normoxic 28 to 165 mm01 1'' after 96 h anoxia. This increase was largely due to accumulation of alanine as a result of an anaerobic metabolism. Ammonia was calculated to be the quantitatively dominat~ng nitrogenous end product in S. entomon. An effective efflux of ammonia prevents an excessive build-up of toxic ammonia in the haemolymph.
