Reverse logistics models for the collection of plastic waste: A literature review

Abstract: To support the understanding of recycling models applied to plastics, the main objective of this work is to offer a literature review of the different reverse logistics (RL) models for collecting plastic waste (PW). The methodology used for processing the scientific literature was content analysis, using the google scholar search engine. The main keywords used were RL and PW. This article is divided into two parts: the first part discusses the development of circular economy models and RL networks and raises t… Show more

“…They also lack the regulations relating to composting which engenders problems of process monitoring and low quality of produced compost potentially posing risks to human, animal and plant health and water pollution. Composting activity should be organised through a professional association and should employ a skilled labour force using modern computing technology (Adeleke et al, 2021; Angelis et al, 2021; Valenzuela et al, 2021; Velis et al, 2021). While development agencies implement numerous projects in many of these countries, especially war-struck ones, the issues of their sustainability long after the project termination are a topic of discussion.…”

“…The importance of the circular economy and sustainability underscore the significance of reverse logistics for plastic waste (Valenzuela et al, 2021). A reverse logistics network design comprises strategic decisions concerning waste management facilities, allocation, and product movement, including opening or closing facilities.…”

“…To address these adverse effects, a reverse logistics strategy was introduced. This strategy comprises planning, execution, and management of waste processes aimed at extracting residual values from end-of-life products (Valenzuela et al, 2021;Stallkamp et al, 2022). This is particularly advantageous as it reduces energy and raw material demands while mitigating the adverse effects of plastic waste (Kilic, Cebeci and Ayhan, 2015).…”

“…The manufacturing phase comprises product development, product engineering, process engineering, and value addition through manufacturing. During the EOL phase and with production waste, materials reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling are sought out [9]. Additionally, authors such as Kerin and Pham [2] consider that remanufacturing increases resource efficiency, reduces waste, and supports cleaner and more sustainable production.…”
