Reverse breeding: a novel breeding approach based on engineered meiosis

Abstract: Reverse breeding (RB) is a novel plant breeding technique designed to directly produce parental lines for any heterozygous plant, one of the most sought after goals in plant breeding. RB generates perfectly complementing homozygous parental lines through engineered meiosis. The method is based on reducing genetic recombination in the selected heterozygote by eliminating meiotic crossing over. Male or female spores obtained from such plants contain combinations of non-recombinant parental chromosomes which can … Show more

“…I nbred (true-breeding) lines that are homozygous at virtually all loci enable both consistent production of superior hybrid plants as well as facile genetic analysis [1][2][3][4] . Traditional inbreeding, however, requires six to eight generations of selfing or sib-mating to generate inbred lines.…”

“…Pflanzenhybride, die aus einer Kreuzung zweier homozygoter Elternpflanzen entstehen und heterozygot sind, weisen oft besonders vorteilhafte Ertragseigenschaften im Vergleich zur Elterngeneration auf, was auch als Heterosis-Effekt bezeichnet wird (Dirks et al 2009). Dabei sind jedoch die Eigenschaften der entstehenden Hybride nur schwer vorherzusagen.…”

“…A novel plant breeding technique, termed reverse breeding, is a concrete example that allows breeders to produce a new F1 hybrid in a much shorter timeframe compared with conventional plant breeding techniques (Dirks et al, 2003(Dirks et al, , 2009). The approach is based on the RNA interference (RNAi) mediated down-regulation of genes involved in meiotic recombination of heterozygous lines that have been selected for their elite qualities.…”
