Revealing Color Forces with Transverse Polarized Electron Scattering

Abstract: The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) measured two double spin asymmetries using a polarized proton target and polarized electron beam at two beam energies, 4.7 GeV and 5.9 GeV. A large-acceptance open-configuration detector package identified scattered electrons at 40 • and covered a wide range in Bjorken x (0.3 < x < 0.8). Proportional to an average color Lorentz force, the twist-3 matrix element,d p 2 , was extracted from the measured asymmetries at Q 2 values ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV 2 .… Show more

“…The high-precision JLab experiments measured a clearly non-zero d 2 . More data for d p 2 are needed and will be provided shortly at low Q 2 [325] and in the DIS [288], see Table 1. Then, the 12 GeV upgrade of JLAB will provide d in the DIS with refined precision, in particular with the SoLID detector [364].…”

“…Furthermore, E97-110 [286] and EG4 [242] investigated Γ 1 , Γ 2 , g 1 and g 2 in the Q 2 → 0 limit. EG1dvcs [287] extended EG1 to Q 2 = 5.8 GeV 2 with another large improvement in statistics, and the SANE experiment [288] focused on g 2 and the twist 3 moment d 2 up to Q 2 = 6.5 GeV 2 and 0.3 < x Bj < 0.85. Finally, E06-014 precisely measured d n 2 at Q 2 = 3.2 and 4.3 GeV 2 [289,290].…”

“…The twist-2 part is given in terms of g 1 . The quantity d 2 = 3 1 0 dx x 2 g 2 (x, Q 2 ) twist−3 has been extracted from several experiments (see [2] and references therein) and has been evaluated on the lattice. This Q 2 -dependent number is found to be small (roughly between ±0.01), which suggests the relative unimportance of the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation contributions in this case.…”

“…The experimental measurement of g 2 (x, Q 2 ) is, however, very difficult. The existing data are scattered [20][21][22][23][24][25], and the twist-three part of g 2 (x, Q 2 ) can be extracted with large uncertainties only [26]. The first nontrivial moment of g 2 (x, Q 2 ) that is related to the matrix element of the local chiral-even twist-three operator of the lowest dimension, was estimated using QCD sum rules [27,28], models [29,30], and in lattice QCD [31].…”
