Abstract: Higher incidence of hypoxia or airspace opacification on chest X-ray may be predictors of poorer outcomes for patients with RSV infection.

“…Atelectasis was defined as the presence of a transient pulmonary parenchymal opacity, which was defined as the loss of lung volume [8]. Pulmonary infiltration was defined as lobar, segmental, or subsegmental opacities with discrete or irregular margins [9,10]. Peribronchial thickening was defined as the presence of an increase in linear markings in the lungs, hyperinflation was described as hyperlucency of a portion of the lung, associated with hyperexpansion.…”

“…Chest radiographic findings were classified as “normal,” “infiltration,” “air bronchogram,” and “reticulogranular view.” Infiltration on chest radiograph was defined as lobar, segmental, or subsegmental opacities. 5 Air bronchogram was defined as the bronchi containing air in the periphery of the hilum, becoming visible as a result of atelectasis of the lung tissue or displacement of air in the alveoli with waterproof and contrasting formations. Reticulogranular view was ground glass appearance on chest radiograph defined as increased opacity due to large diffuse atelectasis.…”

“…Chest radiographic findings were classified as normal, infiltration, air bronchogram, and reticulogranular view. 5 Babies' laboratory data were compared. In addition, the seasonal variability of lower respiratory tract virus in patients was analyzed.…”

“…In children, chest x-ray may be normal or abnormal with features of central airspace opacification and peribronchial thickening [52,53]. In adults and elderly patients, chest x-ray generally does not distinguish RSV pneumonia from bacterial infection and most commonly demonstrate bilateral alveolar opacities but may also show interstitial changes [54].…”
