Retrospective ratings of 100 first time-documented stroke patients on the Functional Oral Intake Scale

Abstract: The FOIS is a valid and reliable instrument that is similar in design to the SFAM and requires minimal training for implementation. The transition from the SFAM to the FOIS will provide RLANRC with a reliable and valid assessment protocol.

“…The deficiency of a consistent approach in discovering eating difficulties in stroke patients leads to a discrepancy between patients eating problems and relevant actions taken. Current instruments of measuring eating difficulties are fragmented and predominantly use functional benchmarks [2,5,6,39,[46][47][48][49]. This is important but not sufficient.…”

“…Using key articles means that nearly all of them treat issues reflected in other articles. An example of this overlap is swallowing difficulties where two articles were chosen as key articles [46,47] but actually 64 articles on the subject passed the inclusion criteria. The eliminated articles did not provide any new perspectives for the concept analysis.…”

“… 22 23 The FOIS reflects the functional oral intake of patients with dysphagia and has adequate reliability, validity and sensitivity to change in functional oral intake in patients with stroke. 23 24 It is a seven-point scale (level 1–7), developed to systematically rate the functional level of oral intake of food and liquid. Residents with level 1 (nothing by mouth) till level 6 (total oral diet with multiple consistencies without special preparation but with specific food limitations) will be included.…”

“…This seven-point observer rating scale is considered a reliable and valid tool that can be applied without placing an additional burden on the patient. In adults with dysphagia, the FOIS has been reported to correlate significantly with the Food Intake Level scale (8), swallowing item of the Functional Assessment Measure (9), Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability, modified Barthel Index, modified Rankin scale, and dysphagia and aspiration during a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) (7). Despite the wide use of the FOIS to evaluate dysphagia and assess oral intake recovery in adults (10), it has not been validated for use in infants.…”
