“…Neoplasia is one of the most common underlying disease processes identified in retrospective studies of canine thrombosis (LOE 5, Poor‐Good) . In a large retrospective study of dogs with splenic vein thrombosis, neoplasia was the most common underlying disease identified, affecting over half of the 80 dogs enrolled (54%) .…”

“…Treatment with glucocorticoids also featured prominently in 2 studies of portal vein thrombosis, with 10 out 11 dogs in the Van Winkle study and 14 of 33 dogs in the Respess study receiving glucocorticoids for underlying conditions that also impact hemostasis (immune‐mediated disease, neoplasia, and pancreatitis) . One retrospective study comparing TEG to histopathologic evidence of thrombosis in dogs also noted systemic glucocorticoid therapy in a significant number of enrolled cases (13 of 39 dogs); however, this was the only study that attempted correlate corticosteroid use and necropsy evidence of thrombosis, and no statistically significant association was found (LOE 5, Fair) …”

“…Neoplasia is frequently identified as an underlying disease in retrospective studies of canine thrombosis (LOE 5, Good‐Fair), but thrombosis does not affect the majority of dogs with neoplasia. In addition, comorbidities and recent or concurrent glucocorticoid administration complicate the direct assessment of the risk of thrombosis in dogs with cancer.…”
