Retrospective Analysis of Blood Transfusion Recipients: Evidence for Post‐Transfusion Hepatitis E

Abstract: The results suggest that, in countries where HEV is endemic, the transmission of hepatitis E may be associated with blood transfusion.

“…This disagrees with the report of Junaid et al [6] who recorded a strong association of HEV IgM with history of blood transfusion, but not with IgG. Although, there is no strong evidence that HEV is being transmitted through blood transfusion or blood products [17].…”

“…Transmission occurs mainly by faeco-oral route; however recent reports indicate a significant transmission by blood borne route [4][5][6][7]. In a study carried out in India 1.5% of voluntary blood donors screened for HEV were positive for HEV RNA.…”

“…However, a highly significant proportion (76%) of paid plasma donors were positive for immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies to HEV indicating a possible role of blood derived HEV in transmission of virus among plasma donors [4]. In a retrospective analysis of blood transfusion recipients approximately 5% individuals acquired fresh HEV infection following transfusion [5]. Blood borne transfusion is more common in patients who have received multiple transfusions and there are reports to indicate that these patients are more likely to have icteric disease and higher serum alanine amino transferase levels , however exact natural history of post transfusion Hepatitis E is still not fully elucidated [7,8].…”

“…Retrospektive Untersuchungen in Regionen, in denen HEV endemisch ist, lassen vermuten, dass HEV durch Bluttransfusionen übertragen wurde [180,217]. Über transfusionsassoziierte HEV-Übertragun-gen wurde aus Saudi-Arabien berichtet, einem Land, in dem HEV-1 endemisch ist [181].…”
