Retrorectal Tumors

Abstract: Primary neoplasms of the retrorectal (presacral) space are very rare. These lesions may be congenital or acquired, benign or malignant. They often arise with subtle clinical symptoms, or they may be found incidentally during evaluation for other conditions. Preoperative imaging can provide useful information for operative planning; however, it does not eliminate the need for surgery. Approaches for resection include posterior only and combined abdominoperineal, depending on the characteristics of the lesion. S… Show more

“…Epidermoid cyst, dermoid cyst, duplication cyst, cystic hamartoma (tailgut) and teratoma are considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the rectal region (4,5). Imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are performed for the differential diagnosis of retrorectal cystic lesions.…”

“…Developmental cysts, most of them being congenital, are lesions frequently localized in the retrorectal region (1,2). The major types of retrorectal cysts are epidermoid cyst, dermoid cyst, rectal duplication cyst, rectal cystic hamartoma and teratoma (3)(4)(5). Tailgut cyst, also known as retrorectal cystic hamartoma, is a congenital lesion of embryologic tailgut origin, located in the retrorectal space (2,4,6).…”

“…Adenocarcinoma is the most frequent histological finding in these cases. [16] Teratoma The prevalence of sacrococcygeal teratoma is one out of 40.000 live births with a significant female predilection 4-1. The most common site of origin is believed to be the sacroccocygeal area, followed by ovaries, neck, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, testicles and central nervous system.…”
