Retrodirective Antenna for Inter-Satellite Data Transmission

Abstract: A new X-band retrodirective antenna based on superheterodyne mixer and phase conjugating technology is proposed for inter-satellite data transmission in this paper. The novel phase conjugating circuit, utilizing the reciprocity of the passive mixers, achieves high RF-IF and LO-IF isolations, high communication link gain, and a very compact low profile layout with all antenna elements and circuit components arranged at one common layer of a double-sided printed circuit board (PCB). Its mathematical principles o… Show more

“…Since there is no need for extra signal computation in their structure, RDAs perform significantly faster than smart antennas. These features make RDAs suitable pointing and tracking candidates for a lot of wireless applications including transponders [13], satellite communications [4,14,15], radiofrequency identification (RFID) [16], microwave power transmission [17][18][19], solar power satellites (SPSs) [20], etc. [21][22][23].…”

“…This phenomenon not only affects the resolution and pointing accuracy of payloads such as cameras but also affects the attitude control of satellites [6]. The spaceborne data transmission antenna plays an important role in spacecraft data relay and intersatellite link tasks, but it is also the main source of low-frequency microvibration [7][8][9].…”

“…However, the active components increase the cost and complexity of the proposed tag. Similarly, an active antenna is proposed in [7] for inter-satellite data transmission. On the other hand, some passive tags rely on arrays in phase conjugate configuration (also known as Van-Atta arrays [8]) to increase the backscattered signal strength by reflecting the signal predominately in the direction of incidence.…”
