Abstract. We present and discuss the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) formaldehyde (H 2 CO) retrieval algorithm for the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) which is the operational retrieval for NASA OMI H 2 CO. The version of the algorithm described here includes relevant changes with respect to the operational one, including differences in the reference spectra for H 2 CO, the fit of O 2 -O 2 collisional complex, updates in the high-resolution solar reference spectrum, the use of a model reference sector over the remote Pacific Ocean to normalize the retrievals, an updated air mass factor (AMF) calculation scheme, and the inclusion of scattering weights and vertical H 2 CO profile in the level 2 products. The setup of the retrieval is discussed in detail. We compare the results of the updated retrieval with the results from the previous SAO H 2 CO retrieval. The improvement in the slant column fit increases the temporal stability of the retrieval and slightly reduces the noise. The change in the AMF calculation has increased the AMFs by 20 %, mainly due to the consideration of the radiative cloud fraction. Typical values for retrieved vertical columns are between 4 × 10 15 and 4 × 10 16 molecules cm −2 , with typical fitting uncertainties ranging between 45 and 100 %. In high-concentration regions the errors are usually reduced to 30 %. The detection limit is estimated at 1 × 10 16 molecules cm −2 .

Abstract. A new in situ instrument for gas-phase formaldehyde (HCHO), COmpact Formaldehyde FluorescencE Experiment (COFFEE), is presented. COFFEE utilizes nonresonant laser-induced fluorescence (NR-LIF) to measure HCHO, with 300 mW of 40 kHz 355 nm laser output exciting multiple HCHO absorption features. The resulting HCHO fluorescence is collected at 5 ns resolution, and the fluorescence time profile is fit to yield the ambient HCHO mixing ratio. Typical 1σ precision at ∼ 0 pptv HCHO is 150 pptv for 1 s data. The compact instrument was designed to operate with minimal in-flight operator interaction and infrequent maintenance (1-2 times per year). COFFEE fits in the wing pod of the Alpha Jet stationed at the NASA Ames Research Center and has successfully collected HCHO data on 27 flights through 2017 March. The frequent flights, combined with a potentially long-term data set, makes the Alpha Jet a promising platform for validation of satellite-based column HCHO.

A multiple regression method (MRM) is used for the first time with Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to estimate formaldehyde (HCHO) column over Asia in two categorized areas: (1) anthropogenic areas in East Asia (east-central China, Beijing, Seoul, and Tokyo) and (2) biogenic and pyrogenic areas (Indochina and South Borneo). In order to determine the multiple regression equations (MREs) for each study area, monthly mean and daily values of Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) level, land surface temperature (LST), enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and fire radiative power (FRP) from 2005 to 2006 were used as independent variable candidates and monthly mean and daily HCHO measured by OMI (HCHOOMI) for the same period was used as the dependent variable. The MREs estimated HCHO (HCHOMRM) with inputs of independent variable data for from 2005 to 2006 whereas they estimated HCHO (HCHOVAL) with inputs of independent variable data in 2007. The agreement between HCHOOMI and HCHOVAL is comparable with that between HCHOOMI and HCHOMRM in both monthly and daily scale. The average correlation coefficient, slope, mean bias, mean absolute error, root mean square error, and percent difference between monthly HCHOOMI and monthly HCHOVAL (between daily HCHOOMI and daily HCHOMRM) are 0.89 (0.58), 0.77 (0.34),-0.82 × 10 15 molecules cm-2 (-0.91 × 10 15 molecules cm-2), 1.28 × 10 15 molecules cm-2 (3.01 × 10 15 molecules cm-2), 1.75 × 10 15 molecules cm-2 (4.32 × 10 15 molecules cm-2), 10.2% (24.1%). MRM can be a useful tool to provide HCHO in certain area in Asia.
