“…Another change is that we are fitting the O 2 -O 2 collisional complex cross sec- tion (Thalman and Volkamer, 2013), while in the old SAO retrieval the O 2 -O 2 collisional complex was not considered. The O 2 -O 2 collisional complex has two significative features at 342 and 360 nm that are relevant in the H 2 CO fitting window.…”

“…The construction of the model spectra starts with the radiances from the remote Pacific Ocean, which substitute for the daily solar irradiance, scaled by a factor plus the contributions from the molecular ring correction (Chance and Spurr, 1997) and a correction accounting for the aliasing introduced from spectral undersampling computed online (Chance, 1998;Chance et al, 2005). To this term we apply the Beer-Lambert law to account for the molecular absorption from O 3 (Malicet et al, 1995), NO 2 (Vandaele et al, 1998), BrO (Wilmouth et al, 1999), the O 2 -O 2 collision complex (Thalman and Volkamer, 2013), and H 2 CO (Chance and Orphal, 2011), all convolved with the OMI slit function measured prior to launch (Dirksen et al, 2006). After accounting for the molecular absorption, we include the common mode spectrum obtained by averaging the fitting residuals for each orbit.…”

“…In addition to airborne observations, total column HCHO is measured by satellite (Chance et al, 2000;Steck et al, 2008), making HCHO one of the few VOCs observable from space. Numerous measurement technique reviews and instrument intercomparisons are available (Fried et al, 2008a;Hak et al, 2005;Kaiser et al, 2014;Zhu et al, 2016).…”

“…Sometimes, HCHO cannot be retrieved from satellite observations because of poor measurement conditions (e.g., poor signal to noise ratio (S/N) at UV in winter) (Chance, 2002;Steck et al, 2008). The noise of the sensor itself is constant, however, S/N become poorer when radiation signal get weak especially in winter.…”
