[Retracted] Phytochemical Constituents, Biological Activities, and Health‐Promoting Effects of the Melissa officinalis

Abstract: Medicinal plants are being used worldwide for centuries for their beneficial properties. Some of the most popular medicinal plants belong to the Melissa genus, and different health beneficial effects have already been identified for this genus. Among these species, in particular, the Melissa officinalis L. has been reported as having many biological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antitumour, antiviral, antiallergic, anti-inflammatory, and also flatulence inhibiting effects. The beneficial prop… Show more

“…Plants have a vast store of natural bioactive compounds with beneficial effects on human health [46,[100][101][102]. According to one study, 80% of the world's population still uses plant-derived medications to meet their healthcare needs [45,103,104]. Traditional medicine utilizes a combination of many ingredients; however, the ingredients might not show activities as a single entity but sometimes a combination of ingredients plays an important role in having synergistic effects and modulating other proteins which improve the efficacy of the bioactive principle [105][106][107].…”

“…Despite the scientific advances that have allowed us to understand the crucial contribution of the active molecules present in this plant for their biological and therapeutic potentialities, the relevance of this knowledge goes beyond chemical features, as it is necessary to understand that due to the increased daily living standards of rural populations, decisions regarding the sustainable use of plant resources have been even more underlined [ 27 , 28 ]. In this sense, this review aims to provide an overview of the botanical features, chemical composition, and biological effects of Urtica species towards well-being promotion and disease prevention.…”

“…These compounds involve isoprenoids, tannins, alkaloids, phenols, glycosides, and triterpene glycosides, which protect the plants from different living and nonliving stress-causing factors [26,27]. Such kinds of molecules are produced by herbs for self-protection; these compounds are also used in various industries like nutraceuticals, flavouring F compounds, dyes, and insecticides as they are providing a great response in terms of human health [28,29]. Materialistic significance has brought about an extraordinary enthusiasm for considering the prospects of improving its creation [30].…”
