RETRACTED: Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize

Abstract: The health effects of a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize (from 11% in the diet), cultivated with or without Roundup, and Roundup alone (from 0.1 ppb in water), were studied 2 years in rats. In females, all treated groups died 2-3 times more than controls, and more rapidly. This difference was visible in 3 male groups fed GMOs. All results were hormone and sex dependent, and the pathological profiles were comparable. Females developed large mammary tumors almost always more often than and before cont… Show more

“…Nevertheless, there are critical comments about the duration of feeding studies (e.g., Séralini et al 2011Séralini et al , 2012. Although some of those studies and comments were not published in peer reviewed journals, they are nonetheless being considered in the public discussion (e.g., Velimirow et al 2008;Antoniou et al, 2012).…”

“…Séralini [4], although highly controversial, might have paradoxically contributed to raising the awareness of the need for independent evaluations not linked to the GMO industry. One can only hope that such studies, if really set up, will clarify and pacify the field.…”

“…According to their studies, rats fed for two years with transgenic NK 603 corn and non-genetically engineered corn treated with Round Up died earlier than their fellow rats fed with untreated corn. The rats in the first two groups developed kidney, liver, and breast tumors, revealing the herbicide's long-term chronic toxicity [17]. However, Séralini's research has been criticized for a lack of scientific method and refuted by France's High Council of Biotechnologies [18] and the National Food Safety Agency [19].…”
