RETRACTED: Eugenol promotes functional recovery and alleviates inflammation, oxidative stress, and neural apoptosis in a rat model of spinal cord injury

Abstract: These findings suggest that down-regulating NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathway may support the neuroprotective effect of Eugenol against traumatic SCI.

“…In line with this notion, our data provided evidence that eugenol treatment inhibited the expression of NF‐κB p65 subunit, which consequently contributed to the tumor suppressive activity of this drug. Consistent with our observations, several studies have reported similar observations in different scenarios (Abd El Motteleb, Selim, & Mohamed, ; Choi et al, ; Ma, Mu, Zhang, & Sun, ; Manikandan, Murugan, Priyadarsini, Vinothini, & Nagini, ; Yeh et al, ). Noteworthily, the study performed by Choudhury et al () compared the Ocimum sanctum leaf crude extracts with eugenol in attenuating human monocytic cell activation and concluded that both were capable of inhibiting the translocation of NF‐κB into the nuclei.…”

“…Most SCI patients suffer from paraplegia and bed rest for a long time, which results in a series of complications, such as deep vein thrombosis and bedsores of the lower limbs, and brings heavy burden to patients and their families . The recovery of motor function is often determined by nerve repair after SCI . Rhubarb has effects against cerebral ischemia injury, can alleviate brain tissue injury after ischemia‐reperfusion, and has a protective effect on nervous system injury caused by cerebral ischemia‐reperfusion .…”

“…Most of the clinical trials and experimental studies are conducted for intense research to unfold the underlying pathophysiological processes and for searching ideal and potential therapy for recovery from secondary SCI injuries [8]. Besides motor dysfunction, some of the other important SCI-related biochemical and immunological impairments that get involved are serum tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, interleukin-6, nuclear factor (NF)-κB p65, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), caspase-3, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) [9]. SCI trauma causes a devastating effect not only to the individual patient, but it also incurs heavy expensive burden to the society in general and to the family members, due to substantial long-term healthcare expenditures [10].…”
