RETRACTED ARTICLE: Randomized controlled trial testing weight loss and abdominal obesity outcomes of moxibustion

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of moxibustion therapy on weight loss, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio in young adult females. An experimental design, 51 Asian females were enrolled. Inclusion criteria included females with ages between 21 and 25 years-old and waist circumference ≥ 80 cm, and the exclusion criteria included intolerance to moxibustion therapy and current illness. Two groups were formed, and the subjects in the experimental group received moxibustio… Show more

“…Recently, a study has con rmed that the local thermal stimulation can be used for the treatment of obesity via promoting beige fat activation through the HSF1-A2B1 transcriptional axis 28 . Up to now numerous studies have demonstrated that moxibustion promote the operation of qi and blood by activating acupoints, and regulate the nerve-endocrine-immune network and viscera function by adjusting the adipokines in its body [29][30] . While improving the degree of obesity and dyslipidemia, the immune status and glycolippid metabolism will also be adjusted.…”

“…Bariatric surgery requires a high level of medical technology and may increase the risk of fractures [ 35 - 37 ]. Alternative therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, acupoint catgut embedding (ACE), and massage are increasingly used for the treatment of obesity [ 38 - 42 ].…”

“…Moxibustion, as a green therapy for weight loss because of its safe operation, outstanding curative effect, low cost, and good patient compliance, has become a popular treatment option for obese patients in recent years. Numerous studies indicate that moxibustion is efficient in relieving menopausal symptoms by enhancing the immune system and altering the amounts of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system through repeatedly stimulating acupoints[ 18 , 19 ]. As far as we know, by applying moxa to warm acupoints and body areas, moxibustion can promote a smoother flow of qi and blood in the human body[ 20 ].…”
