RETRACTED ARTICLE: Management of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Abstract: The common and distressing complications of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are the main concern of 40-70% of patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC). The first step in preventing PONV after LC is to reduce the risk factors involving patient characteristics, surgical procedure, anesthetic technique, and postoperative care. Particularly, the use of propofol-based anesthesia can reduce the incidence of PONV after LC. Second, prophylactic antiemetics including antihistamines (dimenhydrinate… Show more

“…Multiple factors, including patient-related factors, type of the surgical procedure, or choice of the anesthetics, are considered possible etiologies of PONV 12,13. Despite the fact that the patients in the Des group exhibited only one or no patient-related risk factors for PONV and all received ramosetron as prophylaxis, the incidence of PONV was 58.1%, which is much higher than the incidence of 36% after laparoscopic cholecystectomy 18.…”

“…Furthermore, several studies recommended TIVA with propofol for anesthesia in patients at high risk for PONV 12-15. However, no studies were designed to evaluate the incidence and severity of PONV in patients undergoing RLRP at low risk for PONV.…”

“…Insufflation of CO 2 , resulting in stretching of the peritoneum, residual pneumoperitoneum after CO 2 insufflation, peritoneum distension, diaphragm irritation and visceral organ irritation and manipulation have been reported to influence the severity of pain and PONV (5, 13). …”

“…Moreover, the incidence of PONV was up to 53% to 72% after laparoscopic cholecystectomy [2]. In the first 24 hours after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, PONV commonly occurred [3]. …”
