Retinol Binding Protein 4 in Relation to Diet, Inflammation, Immunity, and Cardiovascular Diseases

Abstract: Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4), previously called retinol binding protein (RBP), is considered a specific carrier of retinol in the blood. It is also an adipokine that has been implicated in the pathophysiology of insulin resistance. RBP4 seems to be correlated with cardiometabolic markers in inflammatory chronic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It has recently been suggested that inflammation produced by RBP4 induces insulin resistance and… Show more

“…RBP4 is secreted by the liver and the adipose tissue (it is both a hepatokine and an adipokine), and higher blood levels have been linked to insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and coronary artery disease in some reports 48, 49, 50, 51. We observed that circulating RBP4 levels were positively associated with LVMI and LAD.…”

“…Feng et al 21 showed that RBP4 correlated positively with carotid atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and could be used as an early predictor of CVD. Higher circulating RBP4 concentrations were also observed in subjects with high-grade carotid stenosis, infl ammatory dilated cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease and advanced heart failure as compared with control subjects 9 . Even though RBP4 has been proposed as an emerging cardiometabolic risk factor in adults 10,22 , there are discrepancies regarding some of the possible metabolic roles of RBP4 in children and adolescents [23][24][25][26] .…”

“…Moreover, RBP4 has been recently proposed as an emerging risk factor of atherosclerotic disease in adults 9,10 . It is well established that insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia are the main risk factors of CVD, eventually leading to plaque formation and development of atherosclerosis, through which the prominent role of RBP4 as a modulator of atherosclerosis in hyperinsulinemia may be explained 11 .…”

“…Very little RBP originates from adipose tissue. RBP-4 is a novel adipokine and a negative acute phase reactant (5). The high concentration of RBP-4 plays a role in the progression of IR through immunity and inflammatory mechanisms in adipose and vascular tissues.…”
