Retinoids in Disorders of Keratinization: Their Use in Adults

Abstract: Hereditary disorders of keratinization may be a considerable handicap. Oral treatment with retinoids has been shown to be effective in many of these diseases. In the group of ichthyoses, the best results can be obtained in the various types of nonbullous congenital ichthyosis (erythrodermic autosomal recessive lamellar ichthyosis, nonerythrodermic autosomal recessive lamellar ichthyosis, autosomal dominant lamellar ichthyosis). It should be borne in mind, however, that retinoid therapy alone cannot lead to a c… Show more

“…The therapeutic indications of retinoids are wide. Systemic retinoids are used over a long period in some conditions such as keratinization disorders (27,28), ichthyosiform dermatoses (29), xeroderma pigmentosum (30), and cutaneous malignancies (31,32). In these situations, the clinician should be alert for the side effects of retinoids.…”

“…The response rate was undoubtedly high, as 21 of 32 patients (65.6 %) improved significantly, 8 patients (25 %) improved moderately and 3 patients (9.4 %) did not respond to treatment. The improvement was also seen according to the evaluation done on quality of life aspects [66][67][68][69][70][71][72]. A further study compared the improvement of 15 HS patients treated with oral acitretin 0.5 mg/kg body weight with patients receiving the same acitretin dose followed by wide surgical excision.…”

“…59 Milder ichthyoses such as ichthyosis vulgaris and X-linked recessive ichthyosis should not require acitretin therapy. 61 However, six patients with severe X-linked recessive ichthyosis were successfully treated. 62 Among the keratodermas, Vohwinkel syndrome (keratoderma mutilans with hearing loss), keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome, 63 three patients cleared and seven improved markedly on 30 mg daily, followed by dose reduction.…”
