El retinoblastoma es la neoplasia maligna intraocular más frecuente en la edad pediátrica. Es diagnosticado entre el primer y tercer año de vida. Puede afectar uno o ambos ojos, siendo el signo clínico más característico la leucocoria, seguida del estrabismo, nistagmo y ojo rojo. En cuanto a su incidencia, el retinoblastoma es mucho más frecuente en los países menos industrializados, de clase baja y en áreas rurales. Es considerado una enfermedad autosómica dominante, donde ambos alelos del gen RB1 se encuentran mutados, ocasionando alteraciones en el ciclo celular. Existen dos presentaciones del retinoblastoma, la forma hereditaria la cual está asociada a mutaciones de la línea germinal en el gen del retinoblastoma, conocido como RB1, esta presentación generalmente se presenta en niños de edad temprana, la mayoría de los casos son bilaterales o multifocales. La forma no hereditaria se caracteriza por mutaciones somáticas de RB1 en el tumor, generalmente tienen una enfermedad unilateral y unifocal, presentan antecedentes familiares negativos y a diferencia de la forma hereditaria, se presenta a una edad posterior. Las técnicas de imagen utilizadas para confirmar el diagnóstico y evaluar el estadiaje del tumor comprenden la ecografía ocular, tomografía computarizada y la imagen por resonancia magnética. La importancia de la detección temprana y el tratamiento oportuno va a permitir una mayor sobrevida en el paciente.
