Retinoblastoma in Asia

Abstract: Asia-Pacific region bears a significant global burden of retinoblastoma (RB), therefore understanding RB in Asia-Pacific region is important. Based on the year 2013 population estimates, 43% (3452 of 8099 children) of the global burden of RB lives in 6 countries of Asia-Pacific region: 1486 children in India, 1103 children in China, 277 children in Indonesia, 260 children in Pakistan, 184 children in Bangladesh, 142 children in Philippines. “…e incidence of RB is similar worldwide at 1 in 15000-20000 live births, which corresponds to approximately 9000 new cases every year [1,2]. Based on the 2013 population estimates, 43% of the individuals with RB live in Asia, and the prevalence in China was only second to that in India [3]. As modern medicine techniques have advanced, the survival rate is higher than 95%, especially in Europe and America [4][5][6], and the long-term complications in the treatment of RB and the well-being of RB survivors have received increasingly more attention [7,8].…”

“…The incidence of retinoblastoma is approximately 1/15-20000 live births [19,20]. While no gender or ethnic disparities have been identified, a disproportionately greater number of cases are observed in populations with high birthrates [20,21]. Outcomes of retinoblastoma treatment also vary with geographical location.…”

“…Additional chemotherapy before or after enucleation is necessary to prevent cases of hematogenous spreading or involvement of the central nervous system [5,7]. Recurrence and metastasis of high-risk advanced RB is still a major obstacle for successful therapy in China [5,8].…”
