Retinal Oximetry in a Healthy Japanese Population

Abstract: PurposeTo establish the normative database of retinal oximetry using Oxymap T1 in a healthy Japanese population, and study the reproducibility of the measurements in Japanese.MethodsWe measured oxygen saturation in the major retinal vessels with Oxymap T1 in 252 eyes of 252 healthy Japanese subjects. Fundus images acquired using Oxymap T1 were processed using built-in Oxymap Analyzer software. Reproducibility of retinal oximetry was investigated using 20 eyes of 20 healthy subjects.ResultsThe mean retinal oxyg… Show more

“…In our patients with DME, arterial oxygen saturation was 100.3 ± 9.4% and venous oxygen saturation was 56.4 ± 8.9% at baseline, which is higher than the data from the normative database of retinal oximetry in healthy Japanese individuals (Nakano et al. ). The oxygen saturation may be increased in major retinal veins in eyes with diabetic retinopathy, although statistical analysis was not performed.…”

“…Nakano et al. () reported a normative database of retinal oximetry in healthy Japanese subjects, in which the mean retinal oxygen saturation was 97.0 ± 6.9% in arteries and 52.8 ± 8.3% in veins.…”

“…In our patients, the arterial saturation was similar to that reported by Nakano et al However, our patients had slightly higher levels of oxygen saturation in the major retinal veins. Nakano et al11 reported a mean retinal vessel diameter of 124.6±14.4 μm in arteries and 167.3±14.6 μm in veins. In our patients, the mean retinal vessel diameter was 125.2±15.2 μm in arteries and 168.7±14.6 μm in veins.…”
