Retinal nerve fiber layer birefringence evaluated with polarization sensitive spectral domain OCT and scanning laser polarimetry: A comparison

Abstract: A polarization-sensitive spectral domain optical coherence tomography (PS-SD-OCT) system is used to measure phase retardation and birefringence of the human retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in vivo. The instrument records three parameters simultaneously: intensity, phase retardation and optic-axis orientation. 3D data sets are recorded in the optic nerve-head area of a healthy and a glaucomatous eye, and the results are presented in various ways: En-face phase-retardation maps of the RNFL are generated from th… Show more

“…As can be seen, not just the retardation and thickness, but also the birefringence varies as a function of position, ranging from ~0.07 to 0.14°/µm on average. For a wavelength of 840 nm, this corresponds to a dimensionless birefringence Δn of 1.6 -3.3·10 −4 which is in the range of RNFL birefringence values reported in other studies [104,108,109]. (Fig.…”

“…PS-OCT can avoid these problems. Retardation and birefringence measurement and imaging of the RNFL were among the first applications of PS-OCT in the eye [65, [103][104][105][106][107][108][109]. Figure 13 shows an example of PS-OCT retardation imaging in the optic nerve head (ONH) region.…”

“…Kemp et al and Dwelle et al fitted RNFL DPPR data in the Poincaré sphere [11,12]. Using an open air PS-OCT system without single mode fiber and an input state that was circularly polarized, Götzinger et al determined the birefringence induced by the RNFL by fitting DPPR data with a linear regression method [13]. They used a histogram of DPPR data obtained near the photoreceptors to determine the maximum DPPR induced by the RNFL.…”
