Retinal Fixation of Traumatic Retinal Detachment With Metallic Tacks

Abstract: Reports of long-term experiences with mechanical retinal refixation with metallic tacks are scarce. Especially in extended use, the tacks are claimed to cause several complications, including PVR. Although modern ophthalmic surgery offers a variety of methods for retinal reattachment, the complexity of the damage caused by trauma may lead to a dead end in refixation attempts. Nevertheless, retinal tacks may represent an adjunctive remedy in complex retinal detachment cases.

“…On the other hand, retinal tacks insertion may lead to concerns about complications such as bleeding and glial cell proliferation. In fact, the safety of retinal tacking had previously been clinically confirmed in retinal detachment repair surgery, including follow-up cases for ten years [ 18 ]. According to our results, no retinal detachment was observed after our surgery.…”

“…In addition, WAVs can improve the intraoperative field of view and offer better visibility and sharpness image of peripheral retina [ 5 ]. Currently, retinal tack had been abandoned by many surgeons due to unavailability and the concern of safety, we found it might be irreplaceable in cases of GRT with large inverted and rigid flap [ 8 ] and it may cause minimal or no retinal toxicity during as long as 21 years of follow-up [ 9 ]. To our knowledge, this is the first report of managing GRT with MIVS and retinal tacks in Taiwan.…”

“…Such tacks were originally developed to treat retinal detachments (Puustjarvi and Terasvirta, 2001 ). They are pushed through the retina and anchored in the sclera.…”
