Rethinking Third Places: Contemporary Design With Technology

Abstract: Oldenburg’s properties of third places were established almost three decades ago. In order to understand if these properties still hold and if and how ICTs changed the concept of third places, we looked at affordances and practices in nine third places in Paris. Our findings point out that most of the properties have changed and also three new ones have emerged mixing the physical and the virtual. We also provide implications for ICTs that aim at stimulating and supporting properties of third places.

“…For example, Robert Putnam's (2000) book Bowling Alone explores a reduction of engagement in third places. Further exploration of virtual third places is discussed in recent literature on the emergence of "digital" third places (Memarovic et al, 2014;Soukup, 2006). The purpose of this article is to explore an additional divergence from the original conceptualization of first, second, and third places-namely, their application in the lives of socially marginalized people and such relevance for social work praxis.…”

“…Recognizing how marginalized groups make meaning in collapsed place contexts may serve as a jumping off point for reimagining place-based social work research. Future research is necessary to better understand the scope and impact of enduring collapsed place contexts on marginalized communities' wellbeing and mental health, as well as whether digital 'places' may perform the function of 'third places'-particularly for older adults, and perhaps to a lesser extent, incarcerated individuals and people experiencing homelessness (Memarovic et al, 2014). Furthermore, research is needed to understand the ways in which people in collapsed place contexts cope with social exclusion beyond the social construction of first, second, and third places; how else do they experience and negotiate the power structures, control, and covert or overt surveillance?…”
